Tumor Embolization
Tumor embolization is a non-surgical cancer therapy procedure that blocks the blood vessels that supply the tumors in order to reduce or destroy cancerous tumors. This procedure can be performed prior to surgery to shut down the blood supply to a tumor, reducing blood loss during surgical resection. This can also help make tumor margins more easily identified to help remove the tumor more completely and with less effort.
Prior to undergoing tumor embolization, it is necessary to perform an angiogram to map out the blood supply to a tumor and determine if embolization is the most appropriate procedure. Embolization may be an option for patients with tumors that cannot be removed by surgery or are too large to be treated with ablation.
