Drainage Procedures
Paracentesis and thoracentesis are procedures to drain unwanted fluid that has accumulated in the abdomen or chest. Utilizing imaging guidance such as ultrasound, a thin tube or catheter is inserted through the skin into the fluid to alleviate symptoms and obtain samples for analysis if needed. The procedures are typically performed only with local anesthesia. In certain circumstances, a permanent catheter may be inserted with conscious sedation for long-term treatment.
